Functional Microspheres: Nano-Structure & Surface Modification

Functionalization of microspheres is generally dictated by the end application of the microspheres. For ion
transport, functionalization must start at the nano-structure level. Ion transport generally requires inorganic
matrix. For biological or chemical processing, hierarchies of nano-structures are most effective to establish
reaction sites.
The surface of microspheres can be functionalized such that they can be useful for chemical and biological
separations and for selective attachment of molecules or biologics. The surfaces of the microspheres can also be
modified with a mono-layer of molecules to offer hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity.
Nano-structured functional microspheres are also available in stable and inert polymeric matrix. Compared to
equivalent inorganic microspheres, organic microspheres do not have rigidity and mechanical strength.
XL Sci-Tech's is capable of producing nano-structured or functionalized microspheres from a few micron to
several hundred microns in large volume.
